Content Management: SharePoint Educates the Masses

At the Microsoft Sharepoint Conference earlier in the year Bill Gates boasted of 100 million Sharepoint licenses having been sold since SharePoint launched in 2001. This year Microsoft’s expected revenues from SharePoint to exceed $1 billion. Bill Gates said that SharePoint is “based on a vision of letting workers share information in a better way”.

SharePoint may not be the best software for managing enterprise content, but it’s widespread availability has provided the masses an education about what enterprise content management is all about. In a KMWorld-sponsored seminar, Sharepoint users listed what they thought were the most valuable services of SharePoint:

- 43 percent said Collaboration
- 31 percent said Content Management
- 6.2 percent said Business Intelligence
